Super Spear Log Splitter
I recently purchased the Super Spear from your website. I'am happy to say that I am very happy with my purchase. It really beats swinging an ax. Since I am now 58 years old it makes hitting the center of the log much easier.

Choosing the Right Log splitter:
What do I need to know when choosing a log splitter
What type of wood and I splitting?
1. Mixed Hardwood
2. Pine
3. Poplar
4. Iron Wood
5. Red Gum
6. Other?
How much and how large are the logs?
1. Face Cord: 8' wide x 4' high x 18' deep
2. Full Cord: 8' wide x 4' high x 4' deep
Length of logs I'm splitting?
1. Most fireplaces and wood stoves average 16-18" logs
2. Commercial boilers allow logs as long as 36" or more
Consider the diameter of the logs you're splitting.
1. A four way wedge option will cut your work in half
Do I want electric or gas type splitter?
1. Electric splitters: No noise, plug in and go, able to operate in closed conditions, less maintenance
2.Gas: more portable, wider range of tonnage options available
Will I be towing the splitter for any Distance?
Do I have a tractor or skid steer I can use to drive my splitter?
Choose your splitter based on not just the type of wood but how often you'll use it and in what conditions. Choose a smaller unit if your wood is small diameter, 6" to 12" and shorter than 20" for occasional splitting or less than a cord per year. Small electric splitters work great for this application. They can be used in the wood shed, and not worry about fumes, gas, etc.
If you're splitting larger diameter logs then consider your options for a larger splitter whether electric of gas. 16 to 25 ton. Are you splitting alone? Consider
a horizontal/vertical splitter, and always use proper lifting techniques. Your safety is always the most important.
If you're a commercial splitter or have a lot of wood to split, you'll need at least a 25 ton or larger splitter, and cycle time will need to be considered. Cycle time is measure without a log on the beam and the entire length of the stroke back and forth. So if you're a commercial splitter or have a lot of wood to split, we publish cycle times for you convenience.
How do we determine the tonnage force of a log splitter?
Piston size squared x 3.14 divided by 4 = Area of the piston
Area of the piston x pump pressure rating = total lbs of force divided by 2000 = tons
Example:
(4" cylinder x 4) x 3.14 divided by 4 = 12.56 area of piston
12.56 x 3000 (pump pressure rating) = 37,680 divided by 2000 = 18.84 tons
There are other factors to consider when sizing the splitter as well, including the structure, and type of pump, but this is the math behind it. The size of the motor is dictated by the pump capacity.
Thank you for you business.
